It can be quite overwhelming to train a dog. Yet it is well worth it, especially since a trained dog is generally considered safer, more loyal and far more enjoyable to be around. You must always maintain positivity when training a puppy. It is important to be consistent and extremely patient when training your dog. Put time aside every day, somewhere around 25 minutes for training; that amount of time is about the attention span of your pup. Your dog won’t be able to focus for much longer.
When you correct your dog verbally, those corrections should be short and focused on the behavior. It’s not good to rant about how bad your dog is. Inform them of your disapproval and move on. Make sure your voice sounds firm and businesslike.
Try to think like your dog. It is easy to get frustrated with your dog if they are not learning very basic things quickly or at all. Rather than giving up completely, you should try seeing things from your dogs perspective. You should think about how your dog might see things in the world.
Teaching a dog how to roll over isn’t too hard with a few treats in your hand. First, have the dog lay down. Next, hold a treat near the floor on one side of his head, slowly bring the treat up and over the dogs head to the other side. He will probably follow the treat, rolling side to side as it moves. While rolling, use your vocal command. It will probably take multiple attempts, but you will be the talk of the town when the trick is learned.
Dog’s deserve more freedom as their training progresses. If you can instill a healthy sense of obedience with an appreciation for your love, you and your dog are guaranteed to enjoy your time together. Don’t give your dog too much free reign though.
One of the first commands you need to teach your dog is how to step away from things you do not want him to touch. You can use this command for a number of purposes. For example, it is used to prevent the dog from chewing on something or even to guide them out of harm’s way.
Silence your dog’s excessive barking by teaching them a silencing command. After your dog starts barking, show your pet the reward and repeat the command until they cease. At this time, give the treat to your dog. Eventually they will stop barking altogether as a result of the positive association.
When you are walking your dog, be aware of and pay attention to other dogs in the vicinity. Don’t assume you can pet a dog, some of them are aggressive. When a dog seems unwelcoming, stay far away from them.
These ideas will keep your dog on the up and up. Your belongings, other people and even your pet will be safer. When training using the tips above, you’ll find it easier to train your dog, especially by being consistent and patient.
