Dog-proof your home. Your entire home should be safe prior to bringing the dog inside. All cleaning materials and drugs must be put away, and put your trash receptacle inside a cabinet. Some houseplants are toxic and need to be kept out of your dog’s reach.
Since humans don’t speak dog, we need to figure out how to communicate with our pets non-verbally. If they seem hesitant upon meeting up with other dogs or people, don’t force interaction. This could end up in negative biting or fighting behavior. Look out for non-verbal hints so that the dog can guide your actions.
Flea Treatments
Make sure you are informed of what flea treatments you are using for your dog. Many contain ingredients that are dangerous to children. Discuss family-friendly alternative flea treatments with your vet. Be sure to store all flea treatments out of the reach of children.
Do not fall prey to the temptation to feed table scraps to your dog. This will make your dog beg all of the time and also will make it not want to eat its regular food as much. Giving your dog table scraps isn’t good for his health as it could result in weight gain and digestive problems. Resist the temptation and only give dog food to your pup.
Practice your training regimen for your puppy near your home. Training in busy areas with lots of people around should be avoided. They may get distracted and it will be more difficult to teach them even the most basic commands.
Keep your dog on leash any time he leaves your fenced yard, regardless of his gentle nature and good behavior. You never know when something might spook him or distract him, leading to devastation. You are the only one responsible for your dog’s safety and his actions.
If the dog is doing something right, like sitting before he is leashed, lavish him with praise and affection. You need to reward good behavior. Your dog will soon understand that good behavior is rewarded with praise.
